This is a time of great polarization in the world.
On so many different issues, it is common for us to think only one perspective (the one that seems most accurate to us) is true. We choose a side, then treat the other side as an outright lie, with those on the other side assumed to be foolish, selfish, or evil.
There are times when it feels, to me, like we are tearing each other apart.
But Jewish tradition has wisdom that can break through this kind of polarization. The teaching is that all machloket (disagreement) comes from paradox: in which two perspectives which are mutually exclusive are, paradoxically, both true. (To learn more about this idea, watch Sarah Yehudit Schneider’s powerful video series here.)
Jewish tradition teaches that if we are not engaging with paradoxical, contradictory truths, we’re not dealing in truth at all. Maybe that’s why in the Talmud, minority opinions are included.
Knowing this might be interesting, but practicing it is a whole other thing. And the best kind of practice begins with bringing wisdom and balance into our OWN lives.
That’s why, G-d willing, I am preparing to teach a unique new class, Soul Vitamins: Expansive and Practical Strategies to Enrich Your Life.
I’ve designed this series to be fun, engaging, and enriching. We'll learn Jewish texts, do introspective journaling, experience guided meditation, deepen our awareness between sessions, and share our experiences as we grow as a group. Most importantly, we will practice holding contradictory truths by working on your personal balance of:
Rest and Action
Compassion and Justice
Forgiveness and Accountability
Generosity (Giving) and Gratitude (Appreciative Receiving)
The classes will take place over four Tuesdays at 12-1:30pm ET, starting November 19. Classes will be recorded but available only to registered participants. (*Note: The starting date has shifted one week since my prior message.)
If you would like to re-balance your personal experience of rest, action, compassion, justice, forgiveness, accountability, generosity and gratitude — while widening your consciousness to access your own soul wisdom — I encourage you to join me starting November 19.
I promise it will enrich your soul. And truly, I can’t wait to share the conversation with you.
May we see times of unity, blessing and wisdom soon in our days, and may we soon see all the hostages returning home.
